Silly Costumes & Spilled Milk

It has been SO stinkin' cold here lately! A few weeks back we had a wonderful week of warm temperatures. I'm talking 50s and 60s. The trees started to bud, the birds came back and I got major Spring Fever. It was glorious. I was so caught up in the excitement, then I remembered, IT'S ONLY JANUARY! We still have another good 4+ months of winter ahead. Shoot.

Now that it is freezing again, we have had a few days where Mckinlay and I didn't want to go out and brave the cold, so we have had to get creative at home. We have made up new games, new songs, started dancing a lot, and one of our new favorite things is dress up time.
Also, I thought that it might be fun for Mckinlay and I to start baking together. So I pulled up a chair to the counter for her to stand. She loved helping me stir and pour all the dry ingredients into the big bowl. Everything was going great until I poured the milk in. This girl L-O-V-E-S milk. I should have known it would be a disaster. And I somehow always forget that her arms grow 8 inches longer when there is something naughty waiting to be done.
OOPSIE! Ingredients all over the floor!
I wish I got a picture of the floor (because the counter doesn't look any different that it normally does when I cook, right Ty?) or that somehow someone got a video of me trying to clean it all up while holding her to keep her out of the mess she made. I picked her up and held her right in front of my face, in a moment of frustration, and said "Mckinlay Marie!" And she just giggled and gave me the biggest grin. Ah man! How could I be mad at her!? It was, after all, my fault for letting her get close to all the temptation.

I'm beginning to better understand what my mom went through whenever she would get mad at me. She is always telling me how when I was young and she would try to punish me I would just look up at her and say "I love you Mommy!" or "You're so beautiful Mommy!" And she couldn't help but laugh. I think as I got older it turned into me saying "What flab?" Right mama!?

Anyway, kind of a random post, but I guess I've learned my lesson...stick with the Groucho glasses and hold off on the baking.

  1. Shades of yesteryear...I love it! Your "cuteness" got you out of a lot...with parents who couldn't keep a straight face, teachers that upped your grade with a batch of cookies, police officers trying to issue speeding tickets (Whitney was in on that one!), etc., etc. As you got older and I honed my powers of "cute resistance", remember this one, "...you're cute, but not that cute!?" Oh, the memories...love them and love you! Mamio

  2. I have soooo had those moments of frustration followed by guilt! I can just see Mckinlay swatting at the mess while you're trying to clean it up. So true that it's usually our fault for presenting the temptations! Those cute little rascals!! p.s. I love the glasses :)

  3. Oh McKinlay- she is so dang cute. Who ever looked that cute in a lion costume and funny glasses? The baking thing made me laugh... I think it's the "baking with your kid initiation." It happened to me. Everyone has to go through it to really appreciate your kid when they actually DO help. I finally decided- in the waiting time- to give Madi a bowl of flour and a spoon and let her go nuts. Which she does. And Kurt always comes home and says, "Why do you have to give her flour, Jenn? Can't you do something less messy?" Nope, I can't. That's half the fun. As for trying to discipline a kid that looks at you and says stuff like that- how do you do that?!! Good luck!

  4. Oh Megs...What a darling little girl you have. I think you are so lucky to be able to spend every day with her cuteness! And oh, yes, what a memory that speeding ticket was...Megs definintely knew how to get out of that one! HA HA!! I have tried that on several occasions since, and...nothing! Cute pic of the dress up. How fun!

  5. Oh she'll love it when she's older. Alayna sits on the counter and helps me make dinner nearly every night - she loves to cook! But Connor's still a serious hazard in the kitchen!

  6. You guys have too much fun! Mckinlay is like a little "My Buddy" or "Kid Sister (or, in your case, daughter)" doll- always up for a good time!

You are such an adorable mom!!! I love reading your blog because you're always doing something fun with your cute little family.

  8. Are you sure mckinlay would do something like that? Okay, I'M pretty sure. I can just picture the nose wrinkle smile that she gave you after you scolded her. Glad she's content to stay indoors and have fun with her mom on cold winter days. We're still working on MY capacities to stay inside all day... what am I going to do if we move somewhere else that has freezing winters?

  9. I made a baking mistake too. One day we made brownies. And you always have to taste them- well I put powdered eggs in them so I can go to town. Ashlyn loves chocolate just as much so she dives in too. But now she thinks everything we make is going to taste good (bread dough and all). So she is learning fast that not all we mix in a bowl actually tastes good.
